The rosary is a contemplative prayer that Roman Catholics have prayed for many years. The use of knotted prayer ropes in Christianity dates back to the 3rd or 4th centuries. They were part of a meditation practice in monastic communities.

The word rosary comes from the word rosarium, and the word beads comes from the word bede.

Bede comes from old English meaning prayers. Rosarium comes from Latin meaning rose garden or a bouquet of flowers, or a collection of things, meaning a collection of prayers.

The rosary follows the Life of Christ with each decade.

The rosary’s origin dates back to the 12th century when it was given to Saint Dominic by the blessed virgin Mary. He received a vision encouraging the devotion of the rosary. It was in the 15th century when Pope Pius V officially established a devotion to the rosary in the Roman Catholic Church.
